12-Point Orphaned Solar & EV Rescue Audit Checklist

12-Point Orphaned Solar, Battery & EV System Rescue Checklist

If the contractor who installed your solar array, battery bank, or EV charging station has gone out of business or stopped answering the phone, gather as many of the 12 items below as you can before NYREER’s field engineering team arrives on site. (Don’t worry if you are missing items—our engineers can reconstruct single-line diagrams directly in the field.)

Phase 1: Safe Visual & Documentation Gather (No Tools Required)

  • 1. Inverter Make, Model & Serial Number: Photograph the silver data plate on the side of each inverter (e.g., SMA Sunny Boy / Sunny Tripower, Fronius, SolarEdge, Enphase combiner).
  • 2. Active Fault or Error Code: Record any flashing LED sequences or alphanumeric error codes displayed on the inverter screen (e.g., Isolation Fault, Grid Voltage Out of Range, Arc Fault, Hardware Error).
  • 3. Utility Electric Bills (Last 12 Months): Helps NYREER pinpoint the exact month your net-metered production dropped or stopped registering.
  • 4. Original Permit Package or Single-Line Diagram (if available): Often stored in a clear plastic tube or pouch next to your electric meter or main panel.
  • 5. Monitoring Portal Credentials (if any): Any old login emails for Sunny Portal, Enphase Enlighten, SolarEdge, or ChargePoint.

Phase 2: What NYREER’s Field Engineers Perform During Your Rescue Audit

  • 6. Open-Circuit Voltage (Voc) & String IV-Curve Tracing: Testing every roof or ground string independently to identify failed modules, blown inline fuses, or corroded MC4 connectors.
  • 7. 1,000V DC Insulation Resistance (Megger) Test: Pinpointing moisture intrusion or squirrel/rodent wire damage beneath the array that causes ground-fault shutdowns on rainy days.
  • 8. Infrared Thermal Imaging: Scanning AC/DC disconnects, combiner lugs, and main backfeed breakers under load to catch loose, overheating connections before they arc.
  • 9. Roof Attachment, Racking & Critter Guard Inspection: Checking flashing integrity, mid/end clamp torque, and critter screen condition.
  • 10. Manufacturer Warranty RMA Verification: Checking serial numbers directly against manufacturer warranty databases to secure free replacement hardware where eligible.
  • 11. Repowering vs. Repair ROI Analysis: Comparing a targeted board/inverter repair against repowering with a new German (SMA) or USA hybrid inverter.
  • 12. Monitoring Re-Commissioning: Restoring live cellular or Ethernet production telemetry to your phone and NYREER’s Clifton Park dispatch desk.
